"You Aren't Playing Because of the Catches": Virender Sehwag Slams Karun Nair After Delhi Capitals’ Costly Blunder Against Punjab Kings
New Delhi, April 26, 2026 – In the high-stakes arena of the IPL, a single mistake can alter the course of a season. For the Delhi Capitals (DC), Saturday night’s clash against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium was a masterclass in T20 batting, but it ended in heartbreak fueled by defensive lapses. Following the defeat, legendary opener Virender Sehwag has come down heavily on Karun Nair, suggesting that his poor fielding might have slammed the door on his future opportunities this season.
The Match That Slipped Through DC’s Fingers
The encounter was a run-fest of epic proportions. Delhi Capitals, powered by a historic unbeaten 152 from KL Rahul and a clinical 91 from Nitish Rana, posted a mammoth 264–2. On most nights, such a total is a guarantee of victory. However, the Punjab Kings responded with a display of raw aggression.
While Prabhsimran Singh (76) and Priyansh Arya (43) provided a lightning start, it was PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer who anchored the chase. Iyer, however, was far from fluent initially and offered two clear chances in the 15th and 16th overs. Both times, the ball went toward Karun Nair—who was on the field as a substitute—and both times, the ball hit the turf.
Iyer went on to score an unbeaten 71 off 36 balls, guiding Punjab to a six-wicket win with seven balls to spare.
Sehwag’s Blunt Verdict: “No Excuse for Substitute Fielders”
Known for his “see ball, hit ball” philosophy and equally direct commentary, Virender Sehwag did not hold back while analyzing the game for Cricbuzz. For Sehwag, the fact that Nair was on the field specifically to improve the side’s fielding made the errors inexcusable.
“It is just not acceptable,” Sehwag stated. “Firstly, you are not getting matches. And now when you have a chance as a fielder, at least do some fielding. If you drop catches even there, then the captain will think that since he dropped catches, let us not pick him.”
Sehwag emphasized that modern T20 cricket demands a complete package. Being a specialist batter is no longer a shield against poor fielding. “Just because you are a batter, batting is not your only job. Picking catches and completing run-outs are also your jobs,” he added.
The Hierarchy of Mistakes
Sehwag further explained the psychological impact these errors have on team selection. According to the former “Nawab of Najafgarh,” a captain can forgive a star player in the XI for a mistake, but a reserve player has zero margin for error.
“There is a difference between an indispensable player of the squad dropping catches and somebody brought on as a substitute committing the same mistake,” Sehwag explained. “If I am the captain, and he [Nair] asks me for a chance, I will say that you are not playing because of the dropped catches. He will not have any answer for that.”
Stats That Sting
The match saw a staggering 529 runs scored in just 38.5 overs, with 33 sixes cleared across the boundaries of the Arun Jaitley Stadium. In a game defined by such narrow margins and explosive hitting, the two lifelines given to Shreyas Iyer were statistically the turning points of the match.
For Karun Nair, a veteran of the domestic circuit and a member of the elite 300-run club in Test cricket, this lapse comes at a time when he is already struggling to find a permanent spot in the DC middle order. With the competition for places intensifying, “leaky hands” in the deep could be the deciding factor in his IPL 2026 journey.
What’s Next for Delhi Capitals?
The defeat leaves Delhi Capitals in sixth place on the points table, making their upcoming fixtures “must-win” scenarios. Their next challenge is a formidable one: the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), on Monday.
While the DC camp deals with injury concerns—including a horrific head injury to Lungi Ngidi and fitness clouds over other key players—the focus will undoubtedly shift to their fielding discipline. Whether Karun Nair will be seen on the field again remains to be seen, but if Sehwag’s assessment is anything to go by, the road back to the playing XI has just become significantly steeper.
