His demise marks the end of a remarkable public life that spanned over five decades, leaving behind a legacy deeply rooted in politics, education, and social service.
According to reports, Meghe breathed his last in Nagpur after battling age-related health issues. His passing has triggered an outpouring of grief across political parties, with leaders and citizens alike remembering him as a “people’s leader” who remained accessible and committed to public welfare throughout his life.
A Life Dedicated to Public Service
Born on November 11, 1936, in Pawar (Pawnar) village of Maharashtra’s Wardha district, Datta Meghe began his journey from humble beginnings. After completing his education at Nagpur University, he initially worked with the Life Insurance Corporation before entering public life.
His political career formally began in 1978 when he was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Over the years, he served multiple terms, establishing himself as a strong voice in state politics. His tenure included key responsibilities such as Minister of State for Housing, Civil Supplies, and Technical Education, and later Cabinet Minister for Energy and Forests.
Meghe also served as the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, showcasing his influence across both ruling and opposition benches.

Datta Meghe’s political journey extended beyond the state to the national stage. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) to the Lok Sabha multiple times, representing constituencies such as Nagpur, Ramtek, and Wardha.
He also served in the Rajya Sabha between 2002 and 2008, further cementing his stature as a seasoned parliamentarian.
Throughout his career, Meghe was associated with multiple political parties. He began with the Indian National Congress, later joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and eventually became a part of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2014.
Despite these shifts, his political identity remained anchored in his commitment to Vidarbha’s development.
Champion of Vidarbha and Regional Development
Meghe was widely regarded as one of Vidarbha’s most influential leaders. He consistently advocated for the region’s development and was a strong supporter of the demand for a separate Vidarbha state.
His ability to maintain relationships across political lines earned him the reputation of an “ajaatshatru” — a leader without enemies.
Colleagues often described him as approachable, grounded, and deeply connected to grassroots issues. His son, Sameer Meghe, a BJP MLA, recalled that his father “never refused to help anyone,” reflecting his service-oriented approach.
Contributions Beyond Politics
