Indian origin doctor Devika Bhushan appointed California’s surgeon general

Doctor of Indian origin, Devika Bhushan was appointed California’s Surgeon General after incumbent Surgeon General Nadine Burke-Harris stepped down. Bhushan is the daughter of Indu Bhushan, who set up India’s flagship Ayushman Bharat Mission for annual cashless hospitalisation cover of Rs 5 lakh for over 10 crore vulnerable families, the Tribune India reported. 

Bhushan has written policy analyses on various topics including gun violence, lead toxicity and foster care legal implementation. Bhushan, who did undergraduate studies from Columbia, did her MD from Harvard Medical School, completed general pediatrics residency from the Johns Hopkins Hospital Bloomberg Children’s Centre.

Burke-Harris stepped down to make time for “prioritizing care for myself and my family,” three years after being appointed to the post.
