SOG jawans-Maoists exchange fire in Koraput, rebel camp busted

Koraput: Close on the heels of an inter-state meeting between senior police officials of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, security forces today claimed success in destroying a Maoist camp in Koraput.

The rebel camp was busted during a combing operation by SOG jawans and police at Sunki forest under Pottangi police limits today.

On basis of an input about hiding of as many as 15 red rebels in a cut-off village near the forest, police conducted raids along with SOG jawans. Finding security personnel on the spot, the left wing extremists opened fire and the police retaliated. Till the latest reports were filed in, combing operation was underway.

On the other hand, as many as 15 people in the cut-off area of Tulasi Pahad under Mathili police limits today left home fearing threat to their lives from Maoists.

According to reports, during a praja court held in the area recently, Maoists warned the villagers and asked them to flee the area as they suspected them to be police informers.

The villagers who fled their homes are reportedly staying at their relatives’ place in Mathili area.

Meanwhile, in a related incident, CRPF IG P. Vithul Kumar along with DIG SD Gupta, 4th Battalion Commander and other senior officials visited Gudari camp situated in Rayagada and took stock of various operations and training of the security personnel.

The team also held a discussion with security personnel during a visit to 8th Battalion present at Muniguda and also reviewed situation at naxal-affected areas of Chandrapur, Raibiri and Dangasorada. Later they also visited under-constructed CRPF camp at Jhiliguda.
