Hockey Men’s World Cup: England Stuns Argentina 3-2 to Reach Semi-finals


Bhubaneswar: England today registered a thrilling 3-2 victory over Argentina to reach the semi-finals of the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup at Kalinga Stadium here.

In a pulsating quarter-finals match, veteran drag flick Gonzalo Peillat scored the first goal for Argentina from a penalty corner, however England leveled the game when Barry Middleton gave a field goal in 27th minute.

England, who were impressive with their free flowing attacks and well organised defence, took lead in 44th minute with a goal from Will Calnan.

Peillat once again converted a penalty corner for Argentina in 48th minute to equalize. Soon after, Harry Martin struck the winner against the reigning Olympic champions to take his side to the semi-finals.

In the head-to-head comparison for previous World Cups, England have an advantage as they won 3 out of 8 matches played between them while 3 matches ended in a draw.

India will meet the Netherlands on Thursday, while Germany will face Belgium.

The semi-finals will be played on Saturday, with the final is slated for Sunday.
