Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who has been accused by an 18-year-old Unnao woman of gangrape, visited the Lucknow SSP office on Wednesday evening, triggering speculation that he was going to surrender. The lawmaker, however, soon came out of the office of SSP Deepak Kumar and left with his supporters.
As reporters questioned Sengar on his purpose to visit the top cop’s office, he said in a taunting manner: “Wherever you (media persons) say, I will go. Let’s go sit in your channel’s office. I came here after being asked by my friends in the media. Wherever they say, I will go.”
Earlier, sources said Sengar was likely to surrender before the police after the Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed to probe the rape case and the suspicious death of the victim’s father in custody, submitted a preliminary report to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday evening.
BJP chief Amit Shah, who was in Lucknow for the day, delayed his departure for Delhi to wait for the SIT report. Sources told DNA that the BJP president discussed the future course of action with the Chief Minister.
The 18-year-old victim has alleged that she was gangraped by Bangermau BJP legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brothers.
The victim’s father died in custody in Unnao on Tuesday, prompting the woman to charge that he was killed inside the district jail at the behest of the BJP legislator.
The police arrested Atul Singh, brother of the BJP legislator, in connection with the case.
Meanwhile, a separate enquiry report has been submitted by DIG Prisons Love Kumar on the role of Unnao Jail Administration for the period of detention of the victim’s father in the jail.
Based on the preliminary report of the SIT and the DIG, the government is likely to refer the probe into the rape and the death of the victim’s father to the CBI. Action against at least two doctors is likely to be taken for laxity in giving him proper treatment.
The SIT headed by Additional Director General of Police (Lucknow zone) has been formed to probe the rape case and the death of victim’s father. It was asked to submit a preliminary report before the Chief Minister by Wednesday evening.
Earlier on Wednesday, the SIT visited Unnao’s Makhi village of the rape victim and collected information to submit a report to the chief minister. The probe team visited the crime scene and the tree where the rape victim’s father was tied up and beaten.
“The SIT team will probe on all the aspects of the case and act accordingly. Security has been provided to the victim’s family,” ADGP (Lucknow zone) Rajiv Krishna said.
The SIT talked to the rape victim, her mother, uncle and other family members and also to the suspended and other policemen posted at Makhi Police Station. They also visited the jail and Unnao District Hospital and recorded statements of jail staff, three doctors who performed post mortem on father of the rape victim, who died in police custody.
“We have recorded statements of those related with the case. We are working independently in case under no pressure. As directed, the SIT will submit its preliminary report by late tonight to the Chief Minister’s office,” said the ADG. He, however, refused to share any details related to SIT investigation.
Meanwhile, Sengar’s wife, who met UP DGP OP Singh in Lucknow today, demanded a CBI probe into the matter. She also asked for a narco test on her husband and the survivor.
Sangeeta Sengar told reporters that there was a political conspiracy against her family and accused the complainant of not being consistent in her statements.
Besides the MLA’s wife, the alleged rape victim has also demanded a CBI probe in the entire matter.
