In the backdrop of the threat to the Ashok Gehlot government in Rajasthan, the Congress today ran a nationwide digital campaign titled ‘Speak Up For Democracy’ to protest against BJP’s alleged attempts to topple its state governments.
The social media campaign was the precursor to the Congress’s plans to hold protests outside Raj Bhavans across the country to agitate against the BJP government at the Centre allegedly misusing the office of the Governor to carry out its political agenda.
Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi tweeted a video which charged the BJP with “Ripping up the Constitution and demolishing democracy” even as the whole country was in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.
“We demand that the assembly session (in Rajasthan) be convened immediately, which is within our constitutional rights,” the video demanded.
AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, “Leadership is recognised in times of crisis. In corona’s national crisis, the country needs a leadership that works in the public interest.
“But the BJP government at the Centre has made its intention and its character clear by trying to topple the governments elected by the people. The people will answer”.
The online campaign “#SpeakUpForDemocracy” ran from 10am, with people posting videos asking the Rajasthan governor and the Modi government to show accountability. The Congress said it trended and remained at the top across India and was number five worldwide with more than 3,00,000 tweets till about 5pm.
CWC members, chief ministers, senior party leaders, MPs, MLAs, PCC presidents and party office-bearers and ordinary workers participated in the campaign.
Tomorrow, the Pradesh Congress Committees will hold protests in front of the Raj Bhavans in their respective states at 11am.
