The Karnataka Assembly on Wednesday witnessed noisy scenes when the Congress members staged a protest after Speaker Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri denied Congress MLA H.K. Patil to raise the issue of Bengaluru police detaining former CM of Madhya Pradesh Digvijaya Singh, in the House.
Singh, who landed in the city to meet the rebel Congress MLAs from his state, who are in a huddle in Ramada resort, was prevented by the police from meeting them. Singh, along with Congress leaders from both Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, were taken into preventive custody by the Amritahalli police .
The Congress legislators rushed to the well after the Speaker denied permission to raise the issue during the zero hour, stating Patil had not given prior notice in writing, a requirement under the House rules.
The House turned noisy when the BJP members including senior ministers interrupted Patil, who was initially granted permission to raise the issue by the Speaker. The ministers demanded that the Congress should follow the right procedure and not make impromptu speeches in the House.
Leader of the opposition Siddaramaiah demanded to know why Singh had been taken into custody. “Even a sitting member of this House has been detained by the police. But you are insisting on prior notice,” protested Siddaramaiah.
