‘Imarti Devi ab jalebi ban gayi’: Congress leader mocks her for Madhya Pradesh bypoll defeat

Bhopal: Days after senior Congress leader Kamal Nath stoked a massive controversy by calling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Imarti Devi an “item”, another party leader on Sunday called her “jalebi” mocking her for her defeat in the recently-held Madhya Pradesh bypolls. The BJP is yet to respond to his comment.

When asked by media whether Kamal Nath’s ‘item’ remark was responsible for Congress’ defeat in the bypolls, Sajjan Singh Verma said, “If the ‘item’ comment on Imarti Devi had harmed Congress, why did she suffer a defeat in the election? Imarti Devi jalebi ban gayi.”

Verma’s comments have come in the wake of Congress’ poor performance in the Madhya Pradesh bypolls which were held for 28 constituencies. The BJP won 19 seats while the grand old party secured the remaining nine seats.

Notably, Imarti Devi, who served as a minister in Shivraj Singh Chauhan’s Cabinet, was one of the three BJP ministers defeated in the bypolls. She lost to Congress candidate Suresh Raje by a margin of 7,633 votes from Dabra Assembly seat in Gwalior district.
