Odisha Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill 2018 Passed in Assembly

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly has passed the two important Bills – the Odisha Municipal (amendment) Bill 2018 and the Odisha Municipal Corporation (amendment) Bill 2018 on Tuesday giving power to the people to directly elect their heads in urban local bodies.

The people will now directly elect the mayors in municipal corporations and chairpersons in the municipality and notified area councils, as per the amendment bills.

As of now, the heads of civic body are elected from among the members of the corporators (mayors) and councilors (chairpersons).
Odisha has a total of 113 urban local bodies.
