Odisha Cabinet Gives Nod to Formation of Legislative Council

Bhubaneswar: In a significant decision, the Odisha cabinet has approved the proposal to formation of Legislative council in the State, said Bikram Keshari Arukh, minister for Parliamentary affairs today.

A bill to this effect to be tabled during the forthcoming Monsoon Session to he held on September 4.

Speaking to media Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bikram Keshari Arukh said, “the cabinet approved the proposal to set up a Vidhan Parishad in the state for which a resolution will be brought in the Assembly”.

The cabinet discussed the report submitted by the special committee formed to study the formation of the legislative council in various states.

Arukh said the Vidhan Parishad which will have 49 members will function at old Odisha Assembly.

Earlier, the Odisha Government had constituted a committee headed by Transport Minister Nrusingha Charan Sahu. It has three members from the ruling BJD– Nrusingha Charan Sahu, Pramila Mallik and Manohar Randhari; and two Opposition members Bhujabal Majhi and Nitesh Gangdev of the Congress and BJP, respectively.

The committee had visited Bihar and Telangana to study the functioning of the Legislative Councils there. The panel studied the resolution passed by the Telangana Legislative Assembly for setting up of the Vidhan Parishad.
