New Delhi: At least eight people were killed and several others injured in a massive pile-up due to dense fog in Haryana’s Jhajjar on Monday. The toll is likely to rise.
According to initial reports, at least 50 vehicles collided on Rewari-Rohtak highway in the district after a dense fog shrouded the area. An official said that till now eight people are reported to have been killed, while over 12 are injured.
“As the cruiser jeep was involved in an accident with a truck, other vehicles which were close behind also rammed into each other. The visibility was poor due to dense fog,” a Jhajjar police official said.
A thick blanket of fog reduced visibility at several places in Punjab and Haryana, including Ludhiana, Patiala, Adampur, Amritsar, Halwara, Sirsa, Bhiwani, Rohtak, Jhajjar and Ambala. Karnal was the coldest place at 3.4 degrees Celsius, while Ambala and Hisar recorded respective minimums of 3.8 degrees Celsius and 4.5 degrees Celsius. Rohtak (5.4 degrees Celsius), Bhiwani (6.2 degrees Celsius) and Sirsa (5.2 degrees Celsius) also recorded below normal minimum temperatures.
Two day ago, more than 20 vehicles rammed each other due to fog in Punjab’s Rajpura, disrupting traffic on National Highway 44 for over an hour. However, the occupants escaped with minor injuries.
