Veteran Odia filmmaker Amiya Patnaik no more

Bhubaneswar: Renowned Odia film director and producer Amiya Ranjan Patnaik passed away today at a private hospital in New Delhi following a brief illness. He was 63.

According to sources, Patnaik had been undergoing treatment at the Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon for the past couple of days. He died at around 8.30 am today. He is survived by wife Seema Patnaik and son Anupam Patnaik, a producer in Odia film industry.

Patnaik worked predominantly in the Odia film industry. He made his directorial debut with Mamata Mage Mula (1985). The movie was also his first venture as a producer. Since then he has produced movies like Hakim Babu (1985), Raja Rani (1989), Asuchi Mo Kalia Suna (1989), Paradesi Babu (1999) and Babu I Love You (2005).

In 2015 he returned to the director’s chair to churn out the multiple award-winning movie Tulasi Apa. The movie was screened at several film festivals since 2015 and finally got a theatrical release in 2017. It has Barsha Nayak, Sujit Paikrai and Mamata Panda in prominent roles.

Patnaik’s contribution has left a mark on Ollywood industry and film fraternity, fans, followers and well-wishers have expressed their grief on his demise.
