Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Varun Gandhi on Thursday won the Pilibhit Lok Sabha seat of Uttar Pradesh with 7,02,755 votes. He defeated Hemraj Verma of Samajwadi Party (SP) by a margin of over 2.55 lakh votes.

The seat was held by Varun Gandhis’s mother and Union minister Maneka Gandhi. This time, she was contesting from Sultanpur seat, where Varun Gandhi had won in the last general election.

Varun Gandhi polled over seven lakh votes, while Verma got over 4.48 lakh votes.

Even as the final results are yet to be posted on Election Commission’s website, there is no doubt left in the fact that the Narendra Modi-led NDA government is set to return to power for another five years.

The party is all set to make its 2014 thumping look like a warm-up as it eyes over 300 seats this time.

As the saffron wave echoes across the country, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s main opposition, Congress, has conceded defeat in the elections.

Addressing a press conference, Varun Gandhi’s cousin Congress president Rahul Gandhi congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and wished his party all the best.
